My friend Sue is one of those women who appears to be fearless. Well, that’s what it looked like at first glance. What I later learned, as I grew to know her better, was that she was just as afraid as I was to try some new, daring, risky thing. And actually, she was probably more afraid than I was. The big difference was that she didn’t let her fear stop her. She just noticed her fear and charged on past it.
Once I asked her why she did this – what was her payoff? She replied, “Because it’s the best way I can learn about myself and how life works. If I succeed, great! I learn something. If I don’t succeed, great again! I learn something!”
Wow. Cool.
My suggestion is that EVERY time we take a risk and attempt something that “doesn’t work”, why not, instead of kicking ourselves, blaming someone else or dismissing it as a “fluke”, simply say, “Wow. That experience was FOR ME!” Then take a few minutes and determine what the learning was.
I don’t know about you, but instead of repeating the same stuff over and over, I’d rather get the gold and move on.
From Linda Larsen, your motivational speaker who is swimming in gold
Could not agree more Linda!!! I'm finally learning that it's when I fall that I learn the most!!!! What a gift! Who knew? YOU knew! Because you were the one who taught me that. Everyone should have a motivational speaker like you in their back pocket. You rock!
Thanks Linda – I was just experiencing this with sending ideas on aging to my favorite motivational speakers thinking my nuggets of gold weren't as shiny as everyone else's. Then, I thought whatever, if my thoughts can help stimulate other thoughts it can only help, right? What's the harm? Thanks for reminding me, I'm not alone in the fear.
Why does it take us so long to learn these things?? Can you imagine where we'd be (and who we'd be) if that was our take on life earlier on? But then again, I wouldn't be sharing this wonderful blog with such wonderful, unique, real women, now would I? We're all taking stabs at life and sharing what we're learning. Yay!!
YES I've been fearing my own comedic contribution recently too Marilyn given the talent of such funny motivational speakers in our midst. But it's not going to stop me this time. You guys can just make fun of me behind my back
