I keep hearing people say "I want to change lives", "I want to show people how to create an abundant life", "I want to help people get healthy", "I want to empower people." And then they just stare at me, like I'm supposed to hand them a magic platform to climb on. Honey, you've got your platform! It's called your neighborhood. It's called the internet! It's called your local women's clubs. It's called social media, and ministry groups, and rotaries. It's called writing articles online or publishing your own book. It's called going to a networking event and sharing what you know, not what you do.
You have no excuse to just stand there and tell me you want to change lives. Quit waiting for someone to hire you to do it – and JUST DO IT. Go out there and help. Go out there and give. Read those facebook posts and comment. Share what you know with people who are desperate for it. Look at that sad stranger on the bus beside you and talk to her. Find out who can't afford to go to the dentist and foot the bill. Just do it already. Nothing is stopping you from changing the world except for you. Some of us are so busy waiting for the invitation that we miss the invitation. So here's your invitation: Go ahead, change the world. Worry about the paycheck later. Sometimes I wonder if people want to get paid to change the world more than they really want to change it.
(PS I have nothing wrong with getting paid for what you do. I just think if you go out there and do it instead of talking about doing it – then eventually they will pay you for it.)
Or I may be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
Just another wacky motivational speaker's rant.
You're not wrong, you're speaking your truth! Let me continue. On planes, on trains, on playgrounds, in Dr's waiting rooms, and even to the woman off Craigslist who shows up to buy your crockpot with a story she needs to share.
Love, love, love this rant, Kelly! Our message as motivational speakers has to come from the heart in order to really connect and change lives. That means sharing healthy leftovers with a neighbor, demonstrating how to stretch to relieve a tired back, making someone laugh who could use a little lightening up and continuing to seek out platforms, large and small that will help to get those empowering messages out there. Beautifully ranted.
Rant on, Kelly! And very WELL ranted, by the way! A powerful reminder that we ALL need from time to time. I can see why people think that motivational speakers have the market or platform to do this and so they need one too. But as you said, you can change the world starting with…well starting with YOU for that matter! Thanks for the post, Kelly!
Amen sister! It's true – I've seen this many times, and sometimes I find myself in that category. Nothing happens until you make it happen! I love your rants. Keep 'em coming!
