As a motivational speaker I can make all kinds of assertions from the platform, but if I don’t have the facts and data to back those assertions up – then I’m not doing my job. Not only that, but we have this thing now-a-days called the “internet.” And before I’ve walked off that stage you can check to see if what I said is actually true or not.
So as a STRONG proponent of the importance of, and value in maintaining a positive, optimistic outlook in life, I’ve like to share some cool data with you.
Here’s the truth about your brain when it is in a positive state:
1. You perform significantly better than when you are in a negative, neutral or stressed state
2. Your intelligence rises
3. You are more creative
4. You are actually 31% more productive
5. You are 37% better at sales
Pretty cool, eh? Oh there’s a LOT more research and information to support my belief that – 1) we will be more successful in all areas of our life if we choose happiness – 2) it IS a choice and – 3) there are specific things we can actually DO to heighten our level of optimism and happiness.
My colleague and good friend, motivational speaker Colette Carlson, wrote a GREAT blog post about how you can increase your level of happiness by keeping a Gratitude Journal wherein you make daily entries, listing a few things you are grateful for. Another proven way to pump up your Happy Hormones is to practice daily random acts of kindness. Again – another way to retrain your brain to GET in and STAY in a positive state.
I’ll leave you with this one last piece of data: Apparently doctors are 19% faster and more accurate at coming up with the correct diagnosis when they are in a positive state of mind. So the moral here is obvious. If you are waiting in the examining room and your doctor walks in and appears to be in a cranky mood – RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
