Of all the ways to stay fit, walking is the easiest, safest, and cheapest. It can also be the most fun: a fine day, a good companion, an attainable goal (say, a scenic spot) three or four miles away. On city streets, in the woods, or even round and round the high school track, walking is the best way to experience a landscape. If it’s too rainy for anything but a treadmill indoors, at least you can read or watch TV. And after your workout, you know you’ve done yourself some good.
Walking is the perfect exercise for busy women on the go. Are you a busy woman? Do you know one who could use some simple, effective, wonderful advice? Science is on my side when I tell you that walking builds fitness, burns calories, prevents weight gain, protects against heart disease, stroke and back pain, and increases longevity. Nice list, isn’t it?
A study done by the University of California and reported in the Berkeley Wellness Letter (June 2012) states that women who walked only 30 minutes, 5 times per week lost an average of 5 pounds in 6-12 months – without dieting or exercising intensely. You can lose even more weight if you eat sensibly and walk further and faster. Regular walking is a simple and effective health habit that controls bodyweight and promotes health.
And if you’ve read any of my exercise blogs before you know that 30 minutes is over too quickly if you’re listening to some really great tunes while your out there strutting!
