Right. I didn’t think so. Not many of us have done that. I certainly never had.….until last week.
My husband and I were sitting in a cafe in Paris, safely tucked out of the rain, watching as people set up across the square for a street fair that apparently took place every Sunday morning – rain or shine. A delightful, happy little man, well protected from the elements under a small tent, started playing his accordion. And of course, it was a tango. It’s Paris – so what else, right?
And what to my wondering eyes should appear – but a couple, out of nowhere, who started dancing…in the rain. They danced to that tango with unabashed, uncensored passion – just for the sheer joy of it. They didn’t care that there were people watching. They wouldn’t have cared if people WEREN’T watching. They just danced. Because they wanted to. Because it made them happy. Because they could.
And yes, John and I joined them, as did several other couples. We laughed and we danced and we skipped the light fantastic all around the square as the rain kept coming. I know my hair was all wet and stringy and I’m sure I had mascara running down my face and I just didn’t care. I was stupid happy.
Here’s your assignment – should you choose to accept it. The next time it starts to rain, grab your honey – or your friend or your grandmother or some damn body. Grab them and say, “May I have this dance? I would REALLY like this dance.” Then proceed outside and dance like nobody’s watching. I promise you, it will make you happy. And after they get over the shock of what in the heck’s going on – it will make them happy too.
Gene Kelly would be so proud.
