I once read something a long time ago that has profoundly impacted the way I look at difficult people. The statement was, “Every person you meet has a story that would break your heart.”
If I look at “difficult” people through that lens, I am immediately filled with a little more understanding and compassion. I am also much more in control of my negative emotions. And when I am in control of my negative emotions, I am better able to resolve the problem.

Oh, Linda, this is so true. If everyone remembered that, then the world would truly be a better place. Thanks for sharing!
Linda, great advice. And so very true. Compassion is the best way to deal with difficult people and ourselves. Thanks for the gentle reminder.
This is so true, Linda! My lesson with this was when I worked in a nutritionists office and an incredibly grumpy and difficult patient transformed into a lovely person…after her pain went away and she felt physically better. I always remember that most people feel physically crappy and that can directly affect their behavior!
Isn’t this the truth? Thanks for the reminder. And, if we can’t possibly know someone’s story, we can certainly make one up to help us have that compassion that Colette mentioned. I am surrounded by really great people writing on this blog!!!!
