After taking several standing photos of me from different angles, my physical therapist showed them to me and began to point out where I was out of alignment. He showed me how my feet turned out a bit, my shoulders rolled forward somewhat, my hips were not quite level, my head thrust forward, etc.
I was mortified. I thought about how many times as a motivational speaker, I stand up there on that stage with those huge IMAG screens capturing every nuance of my flawed self. I said something like, “Oh good heavens! I’m a mess!!”
His response was perfect. He looked at me and calmly, with no emotion whatsoever said, “Linda. It’s just information. With it we can fix things. Without it we can’t.”
Wow. How many times have you reviewed your performance, replayed your actions or actually watched yourself on video and then beat yourself up unmercifully for every ineffective move? Next time I encourage you to do the following:
- Simply notice your knee jerk tendency to be horrified.
- Make a conscious choice to detach from the information emotionally
- Tell yourself, “It’s just information”
- Decide what you would like to do differently next time
Ahhhh. Much better.
