2 Things People Never Want to Hear

Never tell someone you're sick or tired!

When someone asks, never admit you're sick or tired!

I can’t remember if I originally read this in ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ or ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’, but in one of those iconic books (especially if you are a motivational speaker!) I learned that there are two things that people NEVER want to hear and that is: “I’m tired” or “I’m sick”.

It’s funny too – did you ever notice that it’s the same people that are always tired or sick?  Makes ya just want to go and hang out with them for happy hour, doesn’t it?  NOT!  And then there are those that are always complaining by saying ‘I’m sick AND tired!’  Wow – a double whammy in one sentence!  I also learned that when you ask someone how they are and they answer ‘I’m Fine’, that actually stands for ‘Frustrated, Insecure, Neurotic and Egotistical’!

I guess I’ve just been an optimist for too long.  When someone asks me how I am, I like to say Fabulous!  When I’m feeling especially frisky, I like to say ‘Front-Row Fabulous!’  I just like the sound of it.  Plus, I can’t not smile when I say it!

So the next time someone asks how you are, don’t bother with telling them you’re sick or tired or even fine.  People really don’t want to hear that.  Find a way to answer, that when you say it, it puts a smile on your face!

  1. How funny you should post this today, Marilyn!  I was just at my hairdresser’s today and met a woman who was complementing myself, my hairdresser and another customer.  Sounds nice, right?  Well not really because each complement was followed by a “poor me” statement.  Examples; “I love your shoes! I can’t wear shoes like that because of my hammertoe”, “Oh, how lovely and tall you are.  I wish I was tall”, and “What nice curly hair, mine used to be nice”.  Now add the thickest, whiniest, New York grandma accent and you get the whole picture. Yikes!  Makes me very happy to be Front Row Fabulous with you!

  2. GREAT reminder, Marilyn!  And it is SO darned easy to forget this, isn’t it?  So I hereby make a commitment:  NO MORE SICK AND TIRED!!

  3. How true, Marilyn! When I worked for motivational speaker Tom Hopkins he always encouraged us to say, “Unbelievable!” with great energy and excitement when someone asked how we were. That way, we could speak our truth either way.

  4. I was going to respond, but I was too tired.
