1,000 Foods Choices Every Day

It’s hard to believe but we literally make thousands of food choices every day.  Choices that will either enhance our health or diminish it.  Choices that will either speed up the aging process, or slow it down.

Think about it.  When you wake up in the morning:

Will you have water or juice?  Cold or room temperature? Tap or filtered? A sip or a cup?  Fresh or from concentrate? Orange or pineapple? Pulp or no pulp?

Coffee or tea?  Caffeinated or decaf?  Green or Pekoe? Sugar, fake sugar or no sugar at all? Black or with milk, cream, 1/2 & 1/2, whole, 2%, 1% or skim?

Didn’t Dr. Atkins say that cream was bad for us?  Didn’t another doctor say that milk was bad for us?  And didn’t Aunt Muriel say that sugar was from the devil???

1 cup or 2?  Should I drink it from a mug, glass, paper or plastic?  Wait!  Doesn’t one of those cause cancer? Or is that only if I microwave it?  Or is it if I’m standing in front of the microwave?  Or is that an x-ray machine?  Oh my gosh!  Should I be getting a mammogram??!!

2 cups or 3?  Now I’ve got the jitters.  Does that mean I’m addicted?  What does the Doctor’s show say about caffeine?  Oh, who cares if it’s good for me the important thing is WILL IT MAKE ME FAT????

Ooh, leftover chocolate cake!  It’s such a little piece and if no one’s here and I eat it really fast it doesn’t count, right?  And there’s egg in it, surely it can’t be that bad!

Oh, alright, alright I’ll have fruit. (How did Dr. Oz get in here?)  Fruit.  Easy choice….Fresh or canned?  Definitely not with corn syrup.  That makes you obese in, like, a week, right?

What?  Water too??  How many glasses?  4, 6, 8?  And don’t forget the fiber!  Never forget the fiber!!!!

Aaargh!  I can’t take the pressure!  Too many choices!!

And it’s only 8 o’clock!!!

Now imagine that all throughout your day.  Whether you realize it or not, we do make conscious and unconscious choices every time we put something in our mouths.  My request is that you become aware of the unconscious choices you make at every turn and then see if you can upgrade the quality of those choices to increase your health and slow down the aging process.

It’s a good place to start.  Deal?

  1. Yes!!! That is SOOOOO true!  So I promise (right hand raised high) to be WAY MORE conscious of what I’m putting in my mouth.  And I’m glad I read this post AFTER I had that dish of ice cream.

BUT BUT BUT! In my defense here…  I think I did it consciously! No, I’m not kidding!  Tell me if I’m on track here:

    1.  I picked Ben & Jerry’s since I think they don’t use a lot of chemicals. It was not laden with sugar-free, fat-free stuff.  It was pretty good ice cream.
    2.  I had 4 ounces!  That’s it! Four measly ounces in one of those little tiny cups they sell.  I made that choice consciously.  I knew if I got a quart of it (sitting right NEXT to the tiny cup), that I could JUST as easily eat a quart in one sitting as I could 4 ounces.
    3.  It follows a day filled with Salmon, eggs, sprouted grain bread, and asparagus (all things I consciously chose).  It’s my TREAT!!!

So I think you are making a difference for me, Miss Polly!!!!  Slowly but surely I’m getting the message!

  2. I pledge to be more conscious as well, Polly. Keep those thoughts coming!
